How it works

How to use the area unit converter

Indian land is still measured in traditional units, and the same word can mean different areas in different states. A kanal and marla are fairly standard in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal (1 kanal = 20 marla = 5,445 sq ft, so 8 kanal make one acre), and a gaj is simply a square yard (9 sq ft). A bigha, however, ranges from about 6,800 sq ft in the Uttarakhand hills to 27,225 sq ft for the pucca bigha used in much of UP, Bihar and eastern Rajasthan.

Pick the unit you have, then choose the bigha size for your region (or type a custom value from your land records), and every other unit updates instantly. Biswa is shown as one-twentieth of the selected bigha. The values come from published conversion tables and the Punjab revenue system (karam × karam = sarsai, 9 sarsai = 1 marla), but local practice and old settlement records can differ.

Before buying, selling or registering land, confirm the area in square metres or acres on the jamabandi, khatauni or sale deed and with the local patwari or revenue office.

  1. Enter the value and choose its unit.
  2. Select the bigha size used in your area.
  3. Read every other unit in the table.
  4. Copy the result and confirm it with official records.
