How to use the paint calculator

The paintable wall area of a room is its perimeter × height: 2 × (12 + 10) × 10 = 440 sq ft for a 12 × 10 ft room with 10 ft walls. Subtract doors (about 21 sq ft each) and windows (about 15 sq ft each), and add the ceiling if you're painting it too.

Litres needed = area × coats ÷ coverage per litre. Interior emulsions in India typically cover roughly 90–140 sq ft per litre per coat on a smooth, primed wall, and the exact figure is printed on the tin, so change the coverage to match your product. Two coats is the usual finish; new plaster also needs a coat of primer, and rough walls may need putty first.

Textured walls, dark-to-light colour changes and porous surfaces use more paint. Round up to the next tin size and keep a little for touch-ups.

  1. Enter room length, width and wall height in feet.
  2. Add the number of doors and windows.
  3. Set coverage from the paint tin and number of coats.
  4. Tick ceiling, primer or putty as needed and read the litres.
