How it works

How to use the discount calculator

A discount of d% means you pay (100 − d)% of the price. ₹2,499 with 20% off is ₹1,999.20. Shops often advertise stacked offers such as “20% + extra 10%”; the second discount applies to the already reduced price, so the total is 28% off, not 30%. This calculator shows the price after each step and the effective total discount.

Shop owners can use it to plan festival sales: check how much each offer really costs you, and compare it with your margin using the profit margin calculator so a sale doesn't wipe out your profit.

The reverse section answers a common question: if something costs ₹1,600 after 20% off, what was the original price? It's 1,600 ÷ 0.8 = ₹2,000. Prices are shown as entered; GST treatment depends on whether the shelf price already includes tax.

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Enter the discount and any extra discount.
  3. Read the final price, savings and total discount.
  4. Use the reverse fields to find an original price.

No. It's 28% off, because the 10% applies to the already reduced price.

How do I find the original price?

Original = sale price ÷ (1 − discount/100).

How do I calculate a discount percentage?

Discount % = (original − sale price) ÷ original × 100.

Does the discount apply before or after GST?

For GST invoices, discounts shown on the invoice reduce the taxable value before GST is calculated.
